KIMA: The Wave at L’Abri Fondation

Following a week residency at Fondation L’Abri an art institution at the heart of Geneva’s upcoming contemporary art scene, Analema Group presented KIMA: The Wave – as visual representation of sound.

The space of L’Abri Foundation is a resonant chamber with its own properties which reflect or absorb sound. The sound installation forms an immersive field which envelops the listener into sound waves. A site-specific generative sound design by Alain Renaud responds to the space and transforms it at the same time. Alain plays with the notions of standing waves, creating a resonance effect, which can be experienced physically at nodes and antinodes. Alain thus creates a moving sonic field for the audience and Evgenia Emets’ poetry performance, echoing  their voices back into the space.

Evgenia Emets’ poem itself found inspiration in the emergence of language through sound, dwelling on sonic qualities of the words, the juxtaposition between the vowels and consonants, and their interplay. The audience was invited to explore interactive sound and visual elements, which allowed the audience to actively participate in bringing the space alive through sound and vision. Two pieces invited the audience to investigate sound – through exploration of their own voice as real-time representation and by observing interference patterns generated by Tibetan singing bowls. A physical standing wave guided audience into the space – a former WWII bunker.

KIMA: The Wave project consists of two installations. Sound is presented as interference pattern on the one hand side, and machine-learning controlled, complex sound feature extractor on the other. KIMA: The Wave was developed by Analema Group, under Evgenia Emets artistic direction and features sound design by Alain Renaud, sound analysis by Sean Soraghan and visual development by Dario Villanueva. Project management: Katerina Loschinina. Producer: Oliver Gingrich.

Kima at Kinetica 2013

KIMA – a holographic telepresence performance by Analema Group will showcase first run of the project at Kinetica Art fair with two performances only – 27th February at 7.30 and 1st of March at 7.00 pm.

Analema Group is also giving a talk at Kinetica at 1 pm on the 1st of March.

KIMA is a holographic visual and sound performance which reflects on communication via telepresence. The art piece is based on the physical conditions of cymatics – the study of physically visible sound wave patterns.

The word ‘Kima’ literally means ‘wave’ in ancient Greek; in this telepresence environment, participants experience the wave form both in its sonic and its physical form as a travelling, ever changing stimulus – as an interface of their actions and interactions.

In project KIMA, the space itself and its exploration are central. A dark space by its very nature offers an immersive environment. How do we respond to this environment – once we sense the presence of the Other? The dichotomy between you and me ceases to exist and gives way to an endless echo reverberating in both spaces. Information on the Other’s presence is only ever provided through sound and synesthetic analogue of the sound – in its visual form.

KIMA project offers an alternative view on communication, transcending physical boundaries and foraying into the realm of invisible tele-streams running through space.

Khaos at the MAMAs / Kinetica 2012

Analema Group

presents

‘Khaos’ live performance

Saturday, 11th of February, 13 pm

@ Kinetica 2012 / MAMAs 2012

followed by the artists’  talk

The project is an interactive visual and sound performance, in which a performer dissolves movement into light created by 3D visualization of fractal manipulation. ‘Khaos’ is investigation into the relationship between breathing, sound, movement and energy based practice and its reflection in a live artistic stage experience. It is aimed to explore the notion of space as field full of potentiality that can reveal itself through succession of movements in a dance.

The piece deals with hidden laws of fractal mathematics, complex algorithms and its reflection in human existence being part many processes in Nature. Using approach of intuitive dance, the performer moves within a geometric pattern created through movement, expanding and unfolding the fractal complexity through motion by altering the mathematical equation on the fly.

The performances that will take place during Kinetica Art Fair at Ambika P3 Marylebone (Westminster University) are part of annual competition commissioned by the Musion Academy (MAMAs). ‘Khaos’ project will be presented as first step of a project in collaboration between Eugenia Emets (artist), Mohammad Taha (3D animation / design), Eurico Moita (programmer), Patricia Afari (sound artist / programmer) to be further developed into a more complex setting. Later in the year Analema Group would aim to create a multi-layered performance, where the audience won’t see the changing variables of the equation, but will observe the infinite growth and depth of multi-world of dependent origination.
